BASIC WATERING
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources
and the Drought Committee have teamed up with WaterSmart, an ongoing
water conservation program, to offer simple, state-of-science tips for
maintaining healthy lawns while using less water. Always observe watering
restrictions imposed in your County.
Water early in the morning (4:00-8:00 AM) to prevent evaporation
Don’t water your lawn too frequently – over watering can
inflict as much damage as lack of moisture. To maintain a healthy lawn,
water slowly and deeply so the soil absorbs the water. Watering should
be for two hours every seven to ten days. (1 inch)
During dry weather, raise your mower blade. Cutting the grass higher
encourages deeper rooting. Keep the blade sharp. A dull blade shreds
leaf tips causing the turf to require more water.
Set your sprinkler low to the ground (instead of high in the air). More
water will reach the roots. Turn off automatic irrigation systems after
significant rainfall.
Mulch heavily with leaf litter or store-bought pine straw/bark. The
covering at the base of plants and trees will help the soil retain water.
