SEEDING GRASSES

After seeding, a 9-week water schedule must be maintained for seeds to germinate.

First 6 weeks: 30 seconds of water - every 3 hours (From Dawn to Dusk)

Next 3 weeks - 30 seconds of water - every 6 hours (From Dawn to Dusk)

QUICK TURF REPAIR

Poor watering schedules during hot, drought periods can lead to brown or bare patches.

One simple solution is to cover the stressed area with coarse sand to preserve the moisture commonly lost to evaporation allowing grass roots to rejuvenate

BASIC WATERING
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Drought Committee have teamed up with WaterSmart, an ongoing water conservation program, to offer simple, state-of-science tips for maintaining healthy lawns while using less water. Always observe watering restrictions imposed in your County.

Water early in the morning (4:00-8:00 AM) to prevent evaporation

Don’t water your lawn too frequently – over watering can inflict as much damage as lack of moisture. To maintain a healthy lawn, water slowly and deeply so the soil absorbs the water. Watering should be for two hours every seven to ten days. (1 inch)

During dry weather, raise your mower blade. Cutting the grass higher encourages deeper rooting. Keep the blade sharp. A dull blade shreds leaf tips causing the turf to require more water.

Set your sprinkler low to the ground (instead of high in the air). More water will reach the roots. Turn off automatic irrigation systems after significant rainfall.

Mulch heavily with leaf litter or store-bought pine straw/bark. The covering at the base of plants and trees will help the soil retain water.

PLANT
WATER TIME

Small Shrubs
(4 feet or less in height)

One minute at medium pressure or 5 gallons

Large Shrubs
(4 feet or taller)

Increase watering time by 15 seconds for each foot of height
(i.e. 8 foot shrub = 2 minutes or 10 gallons)

Trees

Apply two gallons for every inch of trunk diameter
(measure 4 feet above the ground)
Flowers
5 gallons of water per 10 square feet
(One minute at medium pressure)
Bermuda Grass
1/2 inch per week
Centipede &
Fescue Grass
1 inch per week
Zoysia Grass
1 inch per week
